Britain and Dominions agreed that they were "equal in status, in no way subordinate one to another [...], though united by a common allegiance to the crown..." 1931 - Statute of Westminster agreement from "Balfour Declaration" was formalized by UK parliament in "Statute of Westminster" British government could no longer make laws for the Dominions Fiji suspended from the Commonwealth (2nd time) 1949 - London Declaration India: wanted republic + cut constitutional ties with British monarchy, but remain in the British Commonwealth forced to rethink principles of membership: "London Declaration" start of modern Commonwealth: member states are allowed to be republics "British" in name was dropped 2009 1971 - Singapore Declaration first Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM): the Commonwealth's objectives were first outlined in "Singapore Declaration": included core political values that form membership criteria later complemented by "Harare Declaration" in 1991 1995 Mozambique joined as the 1st member that had never been part of the British Empire current Commonwealth members Commonwealth Games Facts: known as "Friendly Games" to support friendship between members share a common language idea first proposed in 1891 (to bring together members of the British Empire) History: 1911: "Festival of Empire", London - to celebrate the coronation of King George V. teams from Canada, Australia, S.
