Presidential Bios

Franklin D. Roosevelt
-Won the New York election for senate in 1910.
-In the summer of 1921, he was hit with poliomyelitis at age 39.
-At the 1924 Democratic convention, he appeared on crutches to nominate Alfred E. Smith as the happy warrior.
-Roosevelt was elected Governor of New York in 1928.
-In November 1932, he was elected president.
-Was elected for a second term in 1936.
-During the pearl harbor attack on December 7, 1941, he directed the organization of the nations manpower and resources for global war.
- Died on April 12, 1945 at warm springs Georgia of cerebral Hemorrhage.

-Created social security though his new deal reform.
-Initiated heavier taxes on the wealthy,
-Created agencies that regulated banks and public utility.
-New controls over banks and public utility.
-Created a work relief program for the unemployed.
-Attempted to alter the supreme court through expansion/adding more members.(this resulted in a constitutional revolution).
-After his New Deal reform act was passed, the government could now legally regulate the economy.
-Good neighbor policy (Outlined mutual actions for aggressors).
-Sought to keep the United States out of European war via the neutrality legislation. Sent England aid in 1940 when it came under attack.
Abraham Lincoln
-During the confederate batteries of fort Sumter and its forced surrender, Lincoln called on the state for 75,000 volunteers.
-Lincoln was the captain during the black hawk war.
-Spent eight years in the Illinois legislature.
-In 1858, he ran against Stephen. A Douglas for senator.
-He lost but gained reputation that won him the republican nomination for president in 1860.
-He was elected for a second term in 1864.
-Assassinated in 1864.

Barack Obama
-Graduated from Harvard Law School.
-Elected as the first African American president of the Harvard law review.
-Taught civil rights and constitutional law at the university of Chicago.
-Elected as senator of Illinois in 1996.
-Passed the first major ethnics reform in 25 years, cut taxes for working families, and expanded health care for children and parents.
-Was elected to the U.S. senate in 2004.

-Working to end the war in Afghanistan.
-Passed a wall street reform to make sure never again taxpayers have to bail out big banks.

-Fought for equal rights and a woman's right to make her own decision.
-Made collage education more affordable for millions of students and their families.
-Plans to create jobs and restore economic security to working families.
-Believes America Prospers when were all in together on subjects.
William J. Clinton
-Was elected On January 20, 1993 and served until January 20,2001.
-Generated the lowest unemployment rate in modern times.
-Lowest inflation rate in 30 years.
-The highest home ownership rate in the country's history.
-Graduated from Georgetown University.
-Won a Rhodes scholarship at oxford.
-Obtained a law degree at Yale.
-Elected Arkansas attorney general in 1976.
-Won governorship in 1978.
-Was impeached due to personal indiscretion but was not found guilty.

-Called for a great nation initiative to end racial discrimination in 2000.
-Huge failed health care reform plan in the second term.
-Sought legislation to upgrade education, to protect jobs, to restrict handgun sales, and to strengthen the environmental rules.
-Dispatched peace keeping forces to war torn-Bosnia and bombed Iraq when Saddam Hussein stopped U.N. inspections for evidence of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons.
-Expanded NATO and encouraged international trade.
-Led worldwide campaign against drug trafficking.
George w. Bush
-Took office on January 20, 2001. Served two four year terms.
-Served or 6 years as the 46 th governor of the state of Texas.
-Received a bachelors degree in history from Yale.
-Received a masters degree in business from Harvard.
-Purchased the Texas rangers baseball franchise in 1989.
-Elected governor of Texas on November 9, 1994.

-Worked with congress to create an ownership of society and build a future of security, prosperity, and opportunity for all Americans.
-Signed into law tax relief to help workers keep their hard earned money.
-No child left behind act of 2001.
This generated a new era of accountability, flexibility, local control and more choices for parents regrading their child's education.
-Also worked to improve healthcare and modernize medicare providing the first ever prescription drug benefit for senors.
-Increased Home ownership, conserved the environment, and increased military strength, pay, and benefits.
-He has supported programs that encourage individuals to help their neighbors in need.
-Created multiple security agencies after 911 that are meant to prevent such actions from occurring.
John F. Kennedy
-Graduated from Harvard in 1940.
-Almost won the Democratic nomination for vice president in 1957.
-Kennedy was the first roman catholic president.
-Was assassinated on November 22, 1963.

-His programs sought to get the economy moving again.
-They were a massive assault on poverty and privation.
-Called for a new civil rights legislation (massive action for equal rights)
-Used the Alliance for progress and the peace corps to bring American aid and idealism to developing nations.
-Kennedy permitted a ban of Cuban exiles, already armed and trained, to invade their homeland.
-Attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro was a failure.
-Kennedy reinforced the Berlin garrison and increased the nations military to strengthen resistance to Russian authority.
-Launched new space programs.
-Imposed a quarantine on all offensive weapons bound to Cuba.
-Russians backed down and agreed to take the missiles away.
-Created the test ban treaty of 1963 to slow the production of nuclear weapons.
George Washington
-was elected on April 30, 1789.
-1759 (Served in the Virginia house of Burgesses.)
-Was elected commander in chief of the continental army in the second continental congress on may 1775.
-On July 1775, he took command of his ill trained troops and embarked upon a war that lasted six years.
-In 1781, with the aid of French allies, he forced the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown.
-Became a prime mover in the steps to leading the constitutional convention at Philadelphia in 1787.
-When the new constitution was ratified the Electrical collage unanimously elected Washington as president.

-Did not want to infringe upon policy making powers that he felt the constitution gave congress.
-He refused recommendations from his pro french secretary of state and pro british secretary of treasury.
-Insisted upon a neutral course until the United States could get stronger.
-Retired early due to an illness.
-Warned the countrymen of the foreseen party split.
-Warned against long term alliances.
