Race To Space
On May 25, 1961 John Fitzgerald Kennedy announced that they would send a man to the moon before the end of the 1960's. That dream came true on July 16, 1969 when Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin Aldrin flew to the moon in the Saturn V rocket. They were in space for 8 days, 14 hours, and 12 minutes. Neil said a comment in space he was there "One small step for man, but a giant leap for man kind." MOON WALK
The race started October 4, 1957 when they launched the Sutnik. It was a 184 lbs satellite. 4 years later the Soviets followed this primitive satellite with the flight of Yury Gagarin, a 27-year-old fighter pilot who became the first human to orbit the earth. The Sputnik had an orbit with an apogee of 584 miles and a perigee of 143 miles. Soviet Union USA The Space Race grew out of the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, the most powerful nations after WW2. For a half-century, the two superspowers competed for primacy in a global struggle pitting a democratic society against totalitarian communism. Space was a crucial arena for this rivalry. Before a atchful world, each side sought to demonstrate its superiority through impressive features in rocketry and space flight. Project by: Samuel Ndukwe Was born in 1906 in Ukraine. He led the development of the world's first ballistic missle, known today as R-7, which became a base for a long-lasting family of space boosters. Sergei Korolev Was an American expendable man-rated rocket used by NASA's Apollo and Skylab programs from 1967 until 1973. NASA launched 13 Saturn V's from the Kennedy Space Center. It remains the largest and most powerful launch vehicle ever brought to operational status. Saturn V The Space Race sparked unprecedented increases in spending on education and pure research, which accelerated scientific advancements and led to beneficial spin-off technologies. An unforeseen consequence was that the Space Race contributed to the birth of the enviromental movement. Effects of Race WINNER OF SPACE There is no proven winner of the race. US was first on the moon, The Soviets were first in space. So anyone can say who they think won.Sarah Palin said The Soviets won, I said the US won because we technically own the moon(first come first serve). So its a tie. Space Race
