Anti-Bullying: How To Train Your Staff
1. Create/adopt an Anti- Bullying Policy, so everyone can be consistent. This should include a definition of bullying and list what are considered bullying infractions, as well as the discipline and procedure (steps taken, if bullying occurs).
2. Incorporate your policy into all of your staff manuals and trainings.
3. Create an anti-bullying pledge for staff and participants.

Example Training Agenda
Successful Training Example From The City of Henderson – Park and Recreation Department in Arizona.
Defined bullying as repetitive, unwanted, aggressive behaviors that involve real or perceived imbalance of power between individuals or groups leading to serious, lasting problems.
The project's research focused primarily on ages 5-15 and preventing bullying in the educational setting.
Project concluded that the Field of Recreation needs to take a stand against bullying by establishing rules, guidelines, consequences and mechanisms for enforcement.
This project looks to expand this definition, provide guidance on establishing anti-bullying procedures and offer tools to train staff within a recreation setting.

Recreation Definition of Bullying
Any behavior in our programs or facilities by a person or group that is perceived as hostile, humiliating, threatening, dehumanizing or otherwise evokes fear of physical or emotional distress to another. It can be conveyed through physical, verbal, written, technological or emotional means. Bullying does not have an age limit, and can either originate in our programs, or be a carryover from educational, community or other recreational settings.
77% of students admitted being bullied, 90% of 4th - 8th graders.
71% of students report bullying as an ongoing problem.
Over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online. More than half of those individuals do not report the bullying to their parents. Additionally, less than 20% report online bullying to law enforcement.
83% of bullying incidents receive no intervention, they continue.
15% of students who do not go to school report it ue to the fear of being bullied. 160,000 kids in the US stay home everyday due to bullying.
Very little research has been done on bullying in sports & recreation environments, but in one study of bullying in athletic programs, 45.3% of participants reported verbal bullying and 17.5% reported physical bullying.

1. Use the “Be Kind” program.
2. Include the “Be Kind” campaign on all meeting/training agendas, on staff shirts/uniforms, and banners.
3. Review with employees the staggering statistics related to bullying (and prevention) during trainings. Also follow-up with reminders and include information in emails, on schedules or any correspondence with staff.
4. Encourage staff to get involved with bullying prevention by empowering them to get involved with “feel good” activities. Get involved with local charity campaigns.
5. Provide staff with a copy of your anti-bullying policy. Post your policies.
6. Recognize your staff for being kind.
7. Start a “kindness committee” with your staff and allow them to plan activities (for the community and employees).
8. Talk about being kind and preventing bullying (with your participants and at work).
Participants who attend "XYZ" Park District will be encouraged to reach their full potential mentally, physically, emotionally and socially, in an atmosphere and environment in which they feel safe, valued and secure and in which respect for self and others is the norm. The staff of our Park District is conscious of the need for a positive working environment and will encourage the involvement of the wider Park District community in an achievement of these ends through a ‘whole park district’ approach whereby every individual is involved in the development of an environment wherein each person is respected and valued.
