Foundation Ethos Logos Group Activity Pathos There are several ways to appeal to an audience when writing.

Among them are appeals to ethos, pathos and logos -- Rhetorical Appeals

You must establish yourself as trustworthy and respectful to the audience. You do this by demonstrating you have taken the time to research your topic, which establishes the credibility. Ethos, pathos and logos -This type of appeal uses reasoning by citing statistics, facts, experts, and evidence. When using this type of argument, you offer your audience examples that are similar to this subject and convince them to draw the conclusion you want. Objective: Students will be able to apply understanding of rhetorical appeals by analyzing examples of advertisements and by evaluating and critiquing persuasion techniques in
their problem-solution essays. We will explore these three ways to appeal to an audience. You will be applying what you learned at the end of the lesson.

Take Cornell notes on the rhetorical appeals. Ethos is related to the English word ethics and refers to the trustworthiness of the speaker/writer. When a judge comments on legal precedent audiences tend to listen because it is the job of a judge to know the nature of past legal cases. This is when you appeal to the emotions of your audience by describing in detail the effect of a particular situation. You should try to arouse a sense of pity, anger, fear, or other emotion in your audience. Pathos is related to the English word pathetic, sympathy and empathy The Greek word logos is the basis for the English word logic. Logos refers to any attempt to appeal to the intellect, the general meaning of "logical argument" -Return to your QuickWrite responses and read your responses to your group members (read aloud - do not pass and read the papers). Identify AS A GROUP which appeal you used in the response. Use your Cornell notes to help you identify the appeal. Write the appeal underneath your response. You will be given your essays from our persuasive writing workshop. Work together to identify the three rhetorical appeals in your persuasive essay. Share your examples with your group members.

Discuss the following questions as a group:
What appeal to you feel most and least comfortable using in persuasive writing?

Identify what you believe is the strongest rhetorical appeal in persuasive writing, Consider: Does it depend on the prompt?

Each individual must answer these questions on the paper with your QuickWrite. QuickWrite: You arrive home 20 minutes after your curfew and your parent or guardian has decided to ground you for a week as punishment. On a separate piece of paper, try to persuade your parent or guardian to change his or her mind by using one of three types of arguments explained below. Answer on a separate piece of paper -- you have 4 minutes. Argument 1: Appeal to your parent or guardian by showing that you are trustworthy and that you care deeply about the situation and its effect on him or her. You should use "I". Argument 2: Appeal to your parent or guardian by telling a story with lots of details to create pity for yourself and your situation. You can use "I", though you may refer to other people as well. Argument 3: Appeal to your parent or guardian by being rational and by giving statistics and commonly held beliefs. Refer to experts and facts that can be supported and explained. You should use "I" sparingly. “In 2006, American traveler Blake Mycoskie befriended children in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS Shoes, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. One for One. Blake returned to Argentina with a group of family, friends and staff later that year with 10,000 pairs of shoes made possible by TOMS customers” THINK-PAIR-SHARE
