The declaration of independence
The declaration announced that the thirteen
colonies of America (currently at war with Great Britain) regarded themselves as independent states
and no longer part of the British Empire.
It has been considered as a major contribution to human rights. Especially its second sentence:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
