A Lesson Before Dying
Author: Ernest J.Gains

Genre:Fiction,poetry

I choose this book "A Lesson Before Dying ",
because I like the way the novel is written and I found it very interesting to read ,also it based on A real incident .
Ernest J.Gains
Ernest James Gaines is an African-American author, he was born in Oscar, louisiana United state. His works have been taught in college classrooms and translated into many languages, including French, Spanish, German, Russian and Chinese. Four of his works have been made into television movies
This novel is about...
Grant is an African American school teacher in the pre-civil rights movement in south part of United state, who feels conflicted about his status as one of the only educated black men in his area. When Grant learns of Jefferson,a young black man falsely accused of killing a liquor shop owner,he reluctantly visits the condemned prisoner. Graduly the two form a frindship and Grant tries to remind jefferson of his value as a human being

My favourite Quote in the book is
"
Whether I should act like the teacher that I was, or like the nigger that I was supposed to be" ( Gaines 47).
This quote is important to the book in the way that it shows how the whites and society saw the blacks and how they were stereotyped into one kind of person. They were seen as inferiors by everyone in which Gaines tries to influence people to become something more then what they were "supposed to be".
Setting of the book takes place
The novel is set in the fictional community of Bayonne, Louisiana, in the pre-Civil Rights South
Favourite Character in the book
My favourite character in the book is
Miss.Emma
(jefferson's godmother), because she possesses greath faith in god after Jeffersons Lawyer call jefferson a hog.
she became obsessed with ensuring that jefferson dies "like a Man"
Characters in the book
Jefferson
-uneducated black men
Miss.Emma
-Jefferson's godmother
Grant Wiggins
-the narrator
Tante Lou
-Grants Aunt
Vivian
_Grants girlfriend
Matthew Antonie

Connections
This book is mostly connectoin to the shawshank Redemption in many ways such as,Jefferson was accused of murder without a fair trial. He was degraded and sent to his
death,hope,finding peace in life.
I recommend this book to everyone to read because it was one of the most interesting book to read. i loved the characters,so well developed and find fun to read, and the ending was left me confused and stunned.
