Hip Replacements Rheumatoid arthritis This is a video if a woman who needs her hip to be replaced. This is a video of the same woman after she has had her hip replaced. RA is a chronic and autoimmune disease which basically means that it can't be cured and that this is a disease where the body attacks itself and mistakes your healthy tissue lining the joints for bad ( intruders ) tissue and destroys it resulting in the joint being swollen and painful and also deforming. What is Rheumatoid Arthritis? Nobody really knows though some researcher suspect that there is a specific gene that will make you prone to the disease. The have also discovered that if you carry that specific gene that lifestyle choices and certain bacteria and viruses may trigger it. What causes Rheumatoid Arthritis? Your hip joint really is just a socket and a ball which is located on top of the femur. When the cartilage in the joint is gone every day activities become very painful. In a hip replacement procedure they will cut off the ball on top of the femur and replace it with an artificial one. They will also smooth out the surface of the hip socket ant then place a metal cap in it which is going to be where the ball of the femur is being placed at the end of the procedure.
