Point of View Definition of Allusion A passing or casual reference; an incidental mention of something either directly or by implication. To show or indicate beforehand. Authors use this to prepare the reader for later events in the story. Definition of Foreshadow 1 Example of Allusion An Example from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" 1 Example of Foreshadow An Example from Lord Of The Rings 2 (the movie): Frodo : "It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill him (Gollum - an uncivilized being) when he had the chance.
Gandalf : "Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bibo may rule the fate of many." When the gargoyle says: "Fly my pretties, fly" It is an Allusion to The Wizard of Oz. The three headed dog, Fluffy, is an allusion to the Greek mythological creature, Cerberus. Another example of allusion is in one of the Harry Potter books: Another Example of Foreshadow: In the opening of The Wizard of Oz, the transformation of Miss Gulch into a witch on a broomstick foreshadows her reappearance as Dorothy's enemy in Oz.
