What is Color?

The Colors of Sunlight
White light is made up of all the colors of the rainbow. Look at the picture. You can see many colors when light shines through the prism. A
prism
is a piece of glass or other transparent object. It is shaped like a triangle. It breaks white light into many colors.
1. Complete the sentences to describe a prism.

Sunlight has many colors, too.
When it is raining, you might see a rainbow. That is because raindrops act like prisms. They break white light into colors. This makes a rainbow.
Light shines on an object.
The object will absorb, or take in, some of the light waves.
2. When you are looking at a colored object, what do you see?
A. the light waves that are absorbed
B. the light waves that are reflected
C. the light waves that are refracted
D. the light waves that are bent
The object adsorbs some colors.
It reflects other colors. You see the reflected colors. You do not see the absorbed colors.

Bananas look yellow because they reflect yellow light. They absorb other colors.
3. Label the shoe to tell the color it will look when the light is turned on.
It is also based on the color of light shining on it.

White light is made up of all the colors of the rainbow. White objects reflect all of these colors, so they look white.

Shine a white light on a white shoe. It will look white. Shine a red light on the white shoe it will look red.
Light hits an object. The color of the light affects the way you see the object.

One rainy day, the Sun began to shine through a break in the clouds. A rainbow appeared in the sky. Why did that happen? What do you think?
Sunlight is white light that is made up of many colors. When the Sun shines through rain, the drops act like prisms. They break the white sunlight into colors, making a rainbow.
The color of an object is based on the light it reflects.


Different colored light changes the color of every object in the room.
Summary: When light strikes an object, the color of the light affects the way the object is seen.
Blue Light
The shoes will be blue when the light is turned on.
Sequence: How could you cause a white golf ball to appear blue, then red, and then yellow?
Place the golf ball under blue light, and the ball looks blue.
Place the golf ball under red light, and the ball looks red.
Place the golf ball under yellow light, and the ball looks yellow.
