Baseball: Americas Pastime The game of baseball consists of 9 players who play both defense and offense. There are 9 different postions on defense in baseball and they are broken into 3 groups: outfielders, infielders and pitchers There are three outfield postions: center field, left field and right field. There are 5 infield positions: catcher, first base, second base, shortstop and thrid base. The final position is pitcher who is the person who throws the ball to the batter. When a team is one defense, their job is to prevent the opposing team from scoring. They do this by getting three outs An out is when the batter either hits a fly ball that is caught before it hits the ground, or when the batter hits a groundball and is thrown out or tagged out before they reach a base or when the batter gets three strikes on them. A strike is when the pitcher pitches the ball over the plate between the batters knees and mid stomach. A ball is when the ball is thrown anywhere else. If the pitcher gets three strikes on a batter, he is out. If he throws four balls to a batter, the batter is walked and gets to proceed to first base. There are four bases in baseball: first base, second base, third base and home base (which is also called the plate). The offense scores by touching all the bases in order without getting out. the order goes 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and then home. On offense the players hit in a specific Full transcript
