Tracheostomy: BCCH A 28 Year Retrospective Review
Retrospective Chart Review

-ethics approved by UBC C&W REB
-all documented tracheostomy procedures from 1982 to 2010
Preliminary Results
-surgical procedure dating back to Ancient Greece
-Involves creating an opening into the trachea with the insertion of a tube for respiration
-Quality Assurance
-Compare results with the literature
In The Literature:
-Overall decrease in frequency due to developments such as endotracheal intubation before 1990's, recent leveling off
-The most common indication for tracheostomy is UAO, over the 90's infection became relatively obsolete as an indication and prolonged ventilation cases increased
-Complication rates range from 18-49% with variation due to criterion of complication
Data Collected:

-date of tracheostomy
-doctor who completed procedure
-date of decannulation

-calculating frequencies across the whole cohort
-comparing data across three time periods (1982-1991, 1992-2001, 2002-2011)
-comparison to previous literature
