show the power of blacks and how they are not giving in to the white's opinions. The leaders were Bobby Seale and Huey Newton. This is when nine African-American high schoolers were chosen to intergrate to an all white High School in Little Rock. The children were physically and verbally abused. President Eisenhower ordered soldiers to protect the children as the walk the halls or Central High. A sit-in is when protestors sit in an area where all whites would sit in a resturant or diner. Usually things would get out of hand and white mens would get violent. The protestors were soon arrested. An African-American who did not give up her seat on the bus for a white man. She was then arrested. Soon later people began to boycott the buses. March on Washington This march took place in the summer of 1969. It ended with the speech of Dr. Marther Luther King jr., "I have a dream. . . " . This march motivated the U.S congress to pass the Civil Rights Act. Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Civil Rights leader.He's well known for his "I have a dream" speech. NAACP This is one of the oldest organization.
It was formed to fight segregation and discrimination. Civil rights Act of 1964 This was when a federal law was outlawed for segregation in schools, public places, and employment. Freedom Rides Freedom rides are when a group of blacks and whites ride the bus through the southern states. Brown V. Board of Education In 1954, the Supreme Court thought that seperate school was unconstitutional. SNCC This was for younger civil rights activists. They worked for more rapid civil rights change. KKK A group of whites who try to intimidate the African-americans. They would actually kill people if they did not like them. Thurgood Marshall He was also a part of the civil rights movement. He argued on the Plessy v. Ferguson case. Malcolm X Malcolm X is known for his earlier career as a major voice in Islam Montgomery Bus Boycott This was a time when blacks would boycott the buses.This happened after Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat for a white man. Birmingham Campaign This is a movement organized to bring attention to how unequally blacks were being treated.
