Who am I ?
What is “your” name ?
My name is
Leonardo da Vinci.
Because the town I came from was called
, I was known as Leonardo da Vinci which means
Leonardo from Vinci.
When and where were you born ?
I was born on
April 15, 1452
in the Italian town of Vinci.
What were you interested in as a child?
As a child, I was interested in the
natural world and
Did you win any awards, honors, or were you recognized for anything ?
Yes. When I was alive, I did not win any award, but I was honored and recognized for doing
. However, I was also labeled as an artist that never finished what he started. (I completed only
throughout my life.)
When my sketchbooks, filled with my ideas for inventions, observations about nature and anatomy, were found centuries after my death, I got recognized as an
inventor and scientist
. Of course, I have been recognized as a
Awards and Honors
Did you live through any obstacles or tragedies in your life ?
Yes. Since my parents were never married each other, I could not attend a university. Therefore, I could not have a job I wanted. I could not be a lawyer and businessman like my father, or a doctor. Luckily, I had an amazing talent for drawing and I could work in one of the art studios in Florence. Another tragedy in my life is that my parents
did not love me
and didn’t want to take care of me, so I had to live with my very old grandparents who
did not love me either
Are you still alive, or did you die ?

, at the age of

The most interesting “fun” fact about my life is that I wrote in Italian using a special kind of shorthand that I invented myself . It is called
starting at the right side of the page and moving to the left, and my writings are deciphered only with a mirror.
Being a lefty was highly unusual in my time. Left-handedness was considered the devil's work and lefties were often forced to use their right hand.
No one knows the true reason I used mirror writing, though several possibilities have been suggested:
- I was trying to
make it harder
my notes and steal
- I was
hiding my scientific ideas
from the powerful Roman Catholic Church,
whose teachings sometimes disagreed with what I observed.
- Writing left handed from left to right was messy because the ink just put
down would smear as my hand moved across it. I chose to write in reverse

What is the most interesting “fun” fact about your life ?
This portrait had been believed to be a self-portrait by Leonardo, but it was dismissed as a fake in 1938
Although none of my inventions were built during my lifetime, I invented many things which were spectacularly ahead of my time. If they had actually been built, they might have revolutionized the history of technology.
In recent years, however, engineers have begun to construct models of my amazing machines and most of them actually work. Some of the coolest designs that I sketched out in my notebooks are
Helicopter, Tank, Scuba Gear, Parachute, Bicycle, Flying Machine, and Movable Bridge.
I also became famous for great art works including two paintings that remain among the world’s most famous and admired,
Mona Lisa and The Last Supper
The Adoration of the Magi
