10/1/12 Evolution of Medicine: There is no specific record of the first time medicine was used. It is known that plants were one of the first methods for healing. The Egyptians and Babylonians both were first to introduce the concepts of diagnosis, prognosis, and medical examination. Herbal medicine was the first way people believed you could be healed. people first believed in using spiritual ways to healing, then medicine was used to evolving to surgery The ancient Egyptians had a system of medicine that was very advanced for its time and influenced later medical traditions. medicine is any substance or substances used in treating disease or illness The Hippocratic Corpus, is a collection of around seventy early medical works from ancient Greece strongly associated with the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates and his teachings. http://kidshealth.org/kid/feel_better/things/kidmedic.html In past era's something as simple as the common cold would be fatal. Today the common cold can be treated by simply buying over the counter medications to help stop symptoms such as cough, runny
nose, and fevers How is medicine received and how does it take affect? A lot of medicines are swallowed, either as a pill or liquid.
the pill goes to your stomach
the digestive juices in your stomach break it down
the medicine goes into our bloodstream
our blood caries it throughout the body Examples of today's medicine Other Forms of Medicine Insulin given as a shot under the skin and then it can be absorbed into the bloodstream IV method of getting medicine into your blood quickly by maintaining a needle inside a vein to have a constant flow of medicine Directly patting ointment on an infected cut
dropping eyedrops into an itchy eye the active ingredient in Delsym is dextromethrophan
the dextromethrophan is surrounded by edible plastic called polistrex

When Delsym hits the stomach an initial amount of dextromethorphan is released into the blood stream, while the rest sits till it dissolved by stomach acid Reasons why medicine is needed.. body makes too much of something
body makes not enough of something
(for ex. insulin)
illness from germs (antibiotics, kill germs called bacteria, can be used to treat it) Continued Examples: the active ingredient in Advil is ibuprofen
Advil Liqui-Gels are composed of an outer casing of gelatin filled with solubilized ibuprofen. Cultural & Societal Effects of Medicine allow people to live long and become healthy. People will have more piece of mind knowing if they get sick they will be able to fight it and survive. More things can be accomplished even if you are sick because of medicine. Back then people would lay in bed and have to have someone take care of them so the work wouldn't get done.
