Characteristics Plants and Animals plants and animals of the pelagic zone form a food chain Lazy Ocean The pelagic zone is a salt-water biome, making it completely distinct from the various freshwater biomes. Oceanic Pelagic Biome The water in the pelagic zone is generally cold, though it is crisscrossed throughout with both warm and cold ocean currents. Tides and waves Food Chain algae and surface seaweeds sustain animals such as plankton and small fish. pelagic zone is also home to larger fish such as sharks and tuna, as well as various species of aquatic mammals such as dolphins and whales.
