4 Types of Theatre
Deadly Theatre: the actor is usually so used to acting like s/he did in rehearsal, that when performing, it's no longer interesting to them and becomes boring or dull.
Holy Theatre: type of theatre where the invisible can appear. (usually appeals to the senses and the audience thinks more about what is happening in the play).
Rough Theatre: the theatre that's not in a theatre (happens in other places, sometimes includes audience interaction, makes the audience feel part of it, etc).
Immediate Theatre: theatre that asserts itself in the moment.
The Immediate Theatre
No play can be completely planned out, because it won't be performed exactly like it was originally planned.
If they're done like that, actors will become bored, lose the focus, and the acting becomes "dead" or dull.
Peter Brook says that the director who does his own designs never believes that the completion of the design can be an end itself.

Peter believes that the essence of theatrical thinking is that a true designer will think of his designs as being all the time in motion, in action, and in relation to what the actor brings to a scene AS it unfolds.
"The later he makes his decisions, the better."
A director believes that the growth of rehearsals is a developing process. There is a right time for everything, and recognizing the moments is what makes it an art.
The director must work with the actors to make his vision real.
"A director is not free of responsibility—he is totally responsible—but he is not free of the process either, he is part of it."
The Immediate Theatre cont.
Brook believes in the use of improvisation during rehearsals/
He states that the aim of improvisation in training actors in rehearsal is to get away from Deadly Theatre.
The purpose of improv during rehearsals is to break the barriers the actors set up for themselves, and to further explore their abilities, in order to develop their character.
If the actors don't practice improv their acting will remain the same, they won't get out of their comfort zones, and the acting then becomes deadly, or dull.
