The theory of language underlying audiolingualism was Structuralism, which viewed language primarily as a system of structurally related elements (phonemes, morphemes,words)
The theory of learning underlying audiolingualism was behaviorism, which claimed that learning language was the same as learning anything else.

There were three main components:
stimulus
response
reinforcement, which could be positive or negative

There were several factors that paved the way for audiolingualism:
the Second World War
the Army method implemented because of the war
America´s emerging as a major international power
increasing interest of linguists for the teaching of English as a foreign language
greatly increased demand for training in English
Background
Remember that design includes:

the syllabus
types of activities
learner roles
teacher roles
the role of the instructional materials
Design
Two of the most important characteristics of this method were the emphasis on oral skills and the drilling type of exercises
Conclusion
Audiolingualsim reached its peak in the 1960´s. Then criticism came from two fronts.

the theoretical foundations were attacked
results fell short of expectations
