Transcript of Why We Should Get Pet Rats

RATS!!!!
Rats don't get bored ...Like, at all! I was worried, because everyone recommended you should cuddle with them everyday, but having them sit on your shoulder while you check your e-mail is considered playtime!!
You have no idea how much I want them!!
Says a professional!!
They are so freaking adorable!!!
r/RATS
You say they're dirty???
Domestic rats carry less diseases than dogs.
Rats groom themselves more than cats do.
You can even litter train them!!
You're 20x more likely to get diseases from your cat, than a domestic rat.
You say they're not good pets???
If they're properly domesticated, they rarely bite.
It takes less time to train rats, than almost any other animal. Including dogs and cats.
Fancy and Dumbo rats are bred to be cute, clean, and friendly.
A domestic rat is actually the second most attached to it's owner. Right next to the dog.
"But they'll be expensive!"
Ahah! But you are wrong!!!!
Things you need for a pet rat
Cage
Done. We have our old bird cage we used for the chinchillas. I looked at two rat cage calculators, and both of them said two adult rats can live happily in there. Except if we buy babies, because the wiring is to wide.
Food
Rat food is really inexpensive. It usually ranges from around $7-$15 for good quality food. And if we forget to buy some, rats need the same nutrients as humans, so we can feed rats almost any leftovers that we have.
The only reason as to why the Tinkies bit everything, was because we didn't give them enough chew toys. Almost all critters (including rats and chinchillas) have teeth that grow their entire life, so they have to chew everything they see. We just have to make sure they have wood and cardboard in their cage, and they shouldn't be biting anything.
Toys
Rats don't need special toys, but they do need a lot of them! They love cardboard, wood, bird toys, cat toys ...almost everything really!! Every video or picture with a rat cage that I see, the cage is full of old cut up and bitten boxes, used as chew toys, huts, etc.
Bedding
We really don't have to worry about that. With the cage that we have, the bottom is grated, so we have to put a mat on top of it, so that they don't get injured. Therefore we don't need bedding. Although we do need litter, but we only need a little bit, because we only need to clean out a tiny litter box every week.
"But what will we do when we're out of town??"
A- It's not like we're out of town that often
B- Rats are fine for up to about 5 days with extra food and a buddy
C- If we're out of town for longer than 5 days, the rattery across town holds an inexpensive rat sitting service, or we can drop them off at Dawn's house
D- You saw in one of the videos that they love to travel!!
"But what happens when you go to university in four years??"
Domestic rats only have an average life span of 3 years ...they'll be dead by the time I go.
Even if they live longer than that, some universities allow pets in dorms and housing. Even better odds if I have an apartment.

We'll actually be saving rats from labs by buying them.
I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really want them!!!!!!
"Due to their habit of not stinking, cleaning a rat cage is painless indeed. Just scoop out the old bedding material, add new bedding, wipe the cage sides down with a damp cloth and you’re done. Such easy care make rats ideal pets for people who live in small spaces, such as your average New York City shoebox apartment, or for people who don’t want to walk their pets on a daily basis or regularly scoop rancid stuff from a litter box. Rats don’t puke, either, which means one less cleanup duty. They don’t puke because they can’t, actually, which is why rats are so easy to poison."
"Everyone who buys them, loves them."
Let's play spot the difference!!!
You stuck??
Here's the answer-
EVERYTHING
Street rats and domestic rats are completely different!!! Street rats are dirty, disease ridden, and mean. While domestic rats are bred to be cute, cuddly, smart, and really clean!!
Street rat
Dumbo rat
May I just add...
We're getting rid of the cats, but I should still be responsible for something. Out of countless possibilities, I chose rats.
I got 9 out of 18 As on my report card, with mainly excellences. That's WAY better than I normally do.
Blair's in Ottawa, and all my friends are in Dundalk...
Dad, you won't be allergic to them!!
Cats shed 1500000000000x more than rats!!
(exactly 1500000000001x)
You already know that I'm responsible enough for pets!!

Should get rats.

I'm totally fine with Mom's idea of getting them in the summer so that I can get used to them. It's a good idea!!! In fact, rats would make a fantastic grade 8 grad present!!
...I just want to know whether to get my hopes up or not...
Done. We have our old bird cage we used for the chinchillas. I looked at a rat cage calculator, and it said that two adult rats can live happily in there. Except if we buy babies, because the wiring is too wide. Although I've seen rat cages online that people have added on wire mesh on the sides that both protects rats from escaping, and lets them climb around the cage.
Rat food is really inexpensive. But if we ever forget to buy some, rats need the same nutrients as humans, so we can feed rats almost any leftovers that we have.
Good quality food ($10)

I will take ALL of the responsibility of them.

I'll clean the cage.

I'll feed and water them.

I'll play with them.

If they damage something, I'll pay for it.

If they make a mess, I'll clean it.
