pollen, etc. Types of air pollution Primary Pollutants These are pollutants that are put directly into the air.
Examples: car exhaust, volcanic ash, industrial smoke Secondary Pollutants These are pollutants that form from chemical reactions that occur when primary pollutants come in contact with other primary pollutants or naturally occuring substances. Examples: Smog and Ozone (the bad kind) are produced when sunlight reacts with car exhaust. We create most of our pollution from the burning of fossil fuels like oil and coal.
Burning fossil fuels produces oxides that are harmful to the environment and to us. Acid Precipitation The oxides that are created from the burning of fossil fuels are absorbed in the clouds. This is a type of secondary pollution.
When the clouds release water as precipitation, it is acidic.
This can damage water supplies, plants and trees, and can be harmful to animals. The Ozone Hole This is caused by pollution chemicals reacting with the ozone layer.
The ozone layer is depleted in several areas around the world.
The largest hole is over Antarctica.
The ozone should regenerate itself as long as we do not produce any more harmful chemicals (CFCs: Chloroflurocarbons). How does air pollution affect us? Air pollution can cause the following health problems:
runny nose Clean Air Act (1970) This act gives the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the authority to control the amount of air pollutants that can be released from any source. The EPA, for example, controls car exhaust standards as well as industry.
The EPA requires industrial plants to use scrubbers.
A scrubber attaches to a smoke stack and removes harmful pollutants.
Scrubbers prevent millions of tons of ash from being released into our atmosphere.
