Long term; you might become anti social, procastinate, neglect responsiblities, lead you to medicating using drugs psychosocial treatment, interpersonal theraphy, peer support groups, exercise, getting enough sleep, giving proper medications. Educate yourself about their symptoms and treatment
Take care of yourself - just because you may feel your not helping don't get depressed or make yourself sick.
Be there for them.
Be patient with them.
Let them know you care
offer them in a way they will accept at the time. DO DON'T Blame yourself for friends illness
Don't force your help on a friend who is not ready to face illness.
Don't feel that they are lazy, they are just ill (example; overwehlmed of their personal reasons)
Don't gossip about them (if they are so ill or depressed)
Don't be judgemental about their medications.

Depression results personality weakness and people who are depressed are lazy
Mental health is the result of bad parenting
People with severe mental illness are mainly dangerous.
Depression is a normal part of aging process.
