Transcript of Racism in "The Giver"

Where everyone looks the same.
The entire community in "The Giver" has “spent all of their years till now learning to fit in, to standardize behavior, to curb any impulse that might set [them] apart from the group,” and by doing that they have taken away everything that makes them unique and individualized (Lowry 72).
"Where did all of the people of color go when this community was started" (Harris 3)?
Racism in "The Giver"
Where no one understands race because they have never seen it before.

It is in the differences such as Jonas's light eyes, however, that we can see the role that race plays in "The Giver."
Every person in the community is white, has dark hair, and dark eyes with few exceptions. This is evident from Jonas's light eyes and Fiona's red hair.
...but in order to have Sameness, you have to get rid of race.

"When a newchild is a twin, the smaller one is released" (Harris 3).
It is released because of its differences.
"With this in mind, it does not seem far-fetched to assume that when the community began, all people of color were released in order to promote Sameness, therefore supposedly ending racism" (Harris 3).

In the novel, the Giver states, “there was a time, actually when flesh was many different colours. That was before we went to Sameness. Today flesh is all the same, and what you saw was the red tones” (Lowry 123).
When people of color are finally introduced in "The Giver," Jonas watches them " hack the tusks from a motionless elephant on the ground and haul them away, splattered with blood" (Lowry 130).
Making everyone in the community white does not not get rid of racism, it actually promotes it.
The only time that people of color are portrayed, they are killing an elephant for its tusks..

By portraying them this way, Lowry promotes racism and justifies the white supremacy that is already evident in "The Giver."
The Elders of the community believed that getting rid of race gets rid of racism, but...
... "Race is not something that people should turn a blind eye to, it is something that should be acknowledged and celebrated" (Harris 4).
