Royal Oak Oil Well They are planning on putting up an oil well in Royal Oak and it is going to be behind the Walmart. It is also going to be near the water storage and the CWRS building. The company that is putting it up is called Kaiser Exploration. The government wants it there because because they get royalties (money) from it. For every dollar an oil well makes, the government makes a little too. Also, they get money from a lease on the well to a company like Kaiser....it's like paying rent to the government for drilling in that spot. Information On the Oil Well If the oil spilled into the water storage, we would be drinking oil, which isn't good for us. Also, Oil+sick or injured animals=Bad idea! The Oil well is blocking the escape route for the people so if there was a sour gas leakage, they wouldn't be able to escape without running into the oil well. (Sour gas is natural gas that contains corrosive, sulfur-bearing compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans.) Actions and Environmental Problems. You use the oil for your car and it pollutes the air causing global warming and oil is a ingrediant in plastic which can't biodegrade (also known as plastic island). The sour gas of the oil well can kill you. Consequences Humans need oil for their cars so they can go to work or visit a relative or something but the car exhaust can start global warming. Humans need clothes and polyester is made out of oil. Plastic is made out of oil and they can't biodegrade. Factories burn fossil fuels which can cause green house gases.any of the gases whose absorption of solar radiation is responsible for the greenhouse effect, including carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, and the fluorocarbons. Human Needs Linked with the Oil Well Community Member: I think that the oil well shouldn't be near the water storage or the CWRS. And don't we have enough oil wells? I also think that it is dangerous to have the oil well near the escape route when they can't escape from the sour gas if it comes. Viewpoints Our prime minister: I really like this oil well because it gives me money. If I don't build that Oil well, it means that I won't get the money so I will have to increase taxes. (made up) Viewpoints 2 Green party member: The biggest issue in Calgary-North West right now is the proposed Oil Well in Royal Oak. The people in Royal Oak and Rocky Ridge have indicated that they do not want the well there. There is no solid evacuation plan if the well hits a pocket of Sour Gas, and there has been no testing whatsoever on how this well (which will have fracking) will affect the underground water storage tank nearby (that supplies local water). There are also some very valid concerns about the well bringing down property values nearby. In short, this is a huge concern for all in the riding, yet the province is pushing forward to implement it, ignoring the voices of our ridings constituents. If elected, I will fight tooth and nail to ensure that well is not built. (Fracking is the process of pumping a bunch of toxic chemicals down into a well to make it cough up more oil. The problem is that by doing so you are introducing toxic chemicals into our environment/drinking water/etc) Student: The oil well can give out sour gas which can kill us and I don't think many people want to die. I don't think the oil well is a good idea because it's not good for the environment. Scientific Educator : I don't think building an oil well in a residential area is a good idea because of the toxins that can come out of it. It wouldn't be good for the residents because of all the traffic because of the big machinery used to build it.
