Two Types of Health Care Systems:

Private Health Care
• Serves just over 70% of Pakistan’s population
• Consists mainly of allopathic physicians, practitioners, herbalists, and traditional/ spiritual healers
• Primarily a fee-for-service system
• Informal and does not work within a regulatory framework
• Very little information is given about the human, physical and financial resources involved with the health care provided

Public Health Care
• Less than 30% of Pakistan’s population uses public health care
• Studies have shown that on average, each person visits a public health care unit less than once per year
Public health care is free
• Reasons for this under-usage include:
o Lack of health care professionals (especially women)
o Poor quality of services
o Inconvenient locations of facilities

Hepatitis B virus
Cancer

Tuberculosis
Arthritis

according to WHO
“Referring to health practices, approaches, knowledge, and beliefs incorporating plant, animal, and mineral-based medicines, spiritual therapies, manual techniques and exercises, applied singularly or in combination to treat, diagnose and prevent illnesses or maintain well-being”

Traditional medicine is administered by mothers and grandmothers in the household.

Many remedies are food-medicines, meaning plant foods and spices that are consumed to obtain a precise medicinal action
Spices and vegetables were considered proper medicines if cooked in specific ways
Elders are more likely to use traditional remedies rather than younger people. Homemade medicines are eroding in younger generations, especially because of immigration.
