The american dream was having fun,
living free and making money.
During the 1980s our economy faced a deep recession. In the year 1980 John Lennon was Also assassinated. In 1981 the first attempt to assassinate the president Ronald Reagan was attempted. In 1983 the U.S. embassy in Beirut was bombed. In 1986 the U.S. bombed Libya. Also in 1986 the Space Shuttle challenger exploded.
Why was this the American Dream?
The American Dream during the 1980s was mainly about getting as much money as they can. During the 1980s while the economy wasn't doing too well, people just wanted to live a care free life and know that they'll be okay by having more money than everyone else. Also since the economy was really bad by having a lot of money the Americans know that they will be living care free and not going to have nothing to worry about. With money comes fun, and since famous movies came out showing all of the fun you can have with having a lot of money made people believe that having money is the only thing that matters.
Early 80's Ronald Reagan was elected for the first time and introduced Reaganomics a concept of living and buying things for the now and not caring about the consequences. There actions had big reactions on the future, it caused many people to go into debt.
