has two movies based on his books Paper Towns and Fault In our Stars

your character is essentially the "life blood" of stories
they should be remembered
your character should reach out to the reader
your story should get you emotionally involved in your character
author might be anxious about creating characters
forgets to show how a character feels about situations, etc
doesn't show characters reaction
basic physical appearance
character, setting and conflict
2000-10 000 - short story
40 000 + words - novel
a novel is about a journey/experience
should always introduce the main character
the character should learn something in a short period of time
are the key to hooking your reader
giving your character nick names
"Hazel Grace"
giving your character a habit or trait
i.e. Augustus would put a cigarette in his mouth but would never light it
they are what makes your story
your characters’ desires, hopes, dreams and thoughts are the whole story
they are what engages us to read a book
without characters there would be no story
