Transcript of The Kuiper Belt

What is the Kuiper Belt?
The Kuiper Belt is a disc-shaped region that expands up to 4.5 million miles around the sun
It is made up of icy objects like dwarf planets and some comets.
How was it discovered
In 1951 astronomer Gerard Kuiper discovered a belt of icy forms just beyond the orbit of Neptune.
In 1992 after five years of searching astronomers found the first KBO(Kuiper Belt Object).

The Kuiper Belt
How did the Kuiper belt form?
When the solar system formed a lot of the gases, dust and rock were used to form the planets and sun
The planets swept the remaining debris to the outer solar system or the sun
The debris outside was safe from gravitational pulls from planets like Jupiter
So the debris slowly started to orbit around the sun forming the Kuiper belt
