Communicating What You Do What will we discuss today? What today WON'T be about Demonising Touring
Finger pointing that one arts sector is worse than another
Giving up on large scale touring Julie's Bicycle Moving Arts report (June 2010)
Communicate What is the journey we need to be on? How engaged are we with greening our touring? LPA Sustainability Survey
80 respondents from LPA and APACA membership around Australia (employers)
Wide range of organisational sizes Q. What are challenges of Greener Touring for you? Q. What does Greener Touring mean to you? Measuring GHG Emissions Commit to pre and post GHG Emission Measurement of each tour
What elements to measure:

Regional Queensland Tour Q. What could you do the reduce the impact of your touring? Reduction Strategies Now analyse the steps you identified using this matrix 5+7= (cc) image by anemoneprojectors on Flickr Developed by Julie's Bicycle

6. General/Other Green Riders Online Carbon Calculators – Be Aware... Generic online calculators do not take into consideration the difference between Scope 1 or Scope 3 Emissions
Scope 1 Emission: Fuel consumed by company owned and/or operated vehicles
Scope 3 Emission: Transport of products, materials, waste
The Mikado example:
Freight represented as a Scope 1 emission - 19.84 tonnes CO2-e
Freight represented as a Scope 3 emission - 2.69 tonnes CO2-e

If you have undertaken all the other steps discussed today, carbon offsetting is a legitimate part of your Responsible Mobility toolkit
While you can offset flights, that is only part of your GHG impact.
Accurate measurement will help you know how many carbon offsets to purchase for a particular tour, or for your organisation for the whole year.
Look for projects which are Gold Standard (GS) or Voluntary Carbon Scheme (VCS)
Both run by internationally accredited NFPs. Solid, legitimate
Low Carbon Australia has an online Guide to carbon offset market and retailers
http://bit.ly/UfSHBZ Carbon Offsetting
1. what accreditation process do they use?
2. are they also working in compliance sector?
National Carbon Offsetting Standard - organisations and products are accredited as carbon neutral. Higher standards apply to retailers in this space
3. what are they buying?
Renewables, Biomass arguably best.
Tree planting as an extra
4. is there a separate auditing and measurement company from offsetting retailer?
(Temptation to overestimate your GHG emissions to sell you more offsets.)
5. what is their retirement system?
International system in place - if a project is being sold, it never gets sold again.
Retirement registries are publicly viewable - with buyer names and a serial number. eg. http://mer.markit.com/br-reg/public/index.jsp?s=cr Questions to ask carbon offset retailers Communicating What You Do Reducing Touring Impacts:
Alternative Aircraft Fuels
•In September 2012 Lufthansa signed a collaboration agreement with Algae.Tec Ltd. for an industrial-scale algae to aviation fuel production facility in Europe.
•In June 2012, Air Canada flew its first flight using biofuels (from recycled cooking oil supplied by SkyNRG).
•In April 2012 Porter Airlines, All Nippon Airways and Qantas all carried out successful demonstration flights using biojet fuel.

These trucks set the standard in the logistics industry for an active approach to climate change. The Fuso Canter Eco-Hybrids use up to 30% less fuel in city driving leading to a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions. Braking energy is retained and fed back into the battery system, making the Hybrids even more efficient and less fuel dependent. Reducing Touring Impacts:
Green Freight Ethanol
Ethanol buses are particularly attractive because:
•They produce significantly less Co2 emissions.
•They are not reliant on fossil fuels and non-renewable energy sources; they reduce Australia's reliance on imported fossil fuels.
•Utilising ethanol means we are supporting the sugar cane industry and thus rural employment.
The electric bus is unique in its use of cutting-edge technology and is driven by electric motors that are connected to two battery banks. These batteries are recharged through regenerative energy from braking and the forward motion of the bus. To ensure the batteries do not drop below a certain parameter, a small two litre Volkswagen car engine is kept on board to top the batteries up.
* Ventura Buses are using both of these technologies.
Unfortunately – not available for private hire or long-distance trips Reducing Travel Impacts: Sustainable Buses FINDING THE BALANCE use telephone/Skype/ video conferencing technology to collaborate in creating work or planning tours wherever possible
instead of transporting sets - look at ways to use digital projection to create same effect
if a tour itinerary is not coming together in an efficient way - explore opportunities to digitally stream the performance into locations not fitting into tour route
consider utilising existing technology to distribute live performances nationally instead of touring eg cinemas being used by opera companies to stream large scale productions, NSW Connected Classrooms technology being used by Sydney Opera House in their education program http://bit.ly/KSGNWV Digital Options when you do tour, measure the community impact of staying somewhere longer than one or two days. It's all about the balance. Note proposed Handprint tool: http://www.handsforchange.org/handprinttools.html measure and share your results - graphs are good!
talk with stakeholders, funding bodies, sponsors and artistic collaborators about the strategies you are implementing to tour more responsibly, and what more you would like to be doing
ask your audience/buyer to play their part by contributing financially to your greening initiatives
make a YouTube video - much more powerful than just numbers on a page Low Carbon Touring was identified as one of the Developmental Goals in the
National Touring Framework released in April 2012.
Final Report pp 60-61 -
"While the consultation process identified this as a key goal, there was no clear agreement as to how far the sector needed to go: would it be enough to deal with glaring inefficiencies through ‘easy wins’ that didn’t entail any compromise to current touring practice (for example, to the geographic reach or the production values of touring product)? Or is much more substantial change needed that would require us to completely rethink what can tour, where and how, if touring is to be economically viable, or even permitted, in a future low carbon economy?"
"The consultations did not propose a large number of practical or well-developed strategies to achieve the goal of increasing sustainability. Discussion centred on the general need to ensure that travel is undertaken efficiently, and that venues and venue operations are energy efficient, yet many participants expressed a sense of powerlessness, feeling that they didn’t have the knowledge or tools to take action."
