Nanocomposite Contact Lenses For Diabetes

By: Dakota McPherson

People with diabetes don't have it easy.

It's constant worrying and every decision they

make has to be based on their disease. The simple

things that we may take for granted they would love to have a day of.

Diabetes Mellitus aka Diabetes

is a group of diseases characterized

by high blood glucose levels that result

from defects in the body's ability to produce and/or use insulin

25.8 million children and adults in the U.S. , 8.3%

of the population, have diabetes.

Diabetes causes approxiamtely 213,404 deaths a year and is also the leading cause of kidney failure.

Nanocomposite Contact Lenses were invented December 16, 2009

Nanocomposite Contact Lenses were developed by Jin Zhang, a chemical and Biochemical Engineering Professor.

Nanocomposite Contact Lenses were designed for people suffering from diabetes. So instead of pricking your finger and drawing blood to test blood sugar daily, by just wearing these lenses you can tell if its low by just looking at your eye.

Nanocomposite Contact Lenses replace the constant need to draw blood through out the day. When placed on the eye the engineered nanoparticles react to the glucose molecules in tears, causing a chemical reaction that changes the color of the eye.

This will help people with diabetes so

they dont need to keep drawing blood. It will also be able to show whether

their blood sugar is low sooner. It helps monitor life threatening variations in their blood sugar levels more closely so it doesn't miss a thing.
