Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, and Dividing Integers
Transcript of Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, and Dividing Integers
An Integer is a number which can be written without a decimal or a fraction bar. It can be a positive or a negative number.
Adding Positive Integers
When you add a positive integer, you add like normal. When you add a positive + a positive, your outcome will be a positive.
Adding negative integers
When adding negative integers, you add like normal and then add your negative sign. A number line would help when adding negative numbers.
Adding a positive and a negative integers
When you add a positive plus a negative number, you take the sign of the largest number. If you are adding a negative to a positive, you simply subtract.
Subtracting positive integers
When subtracting positive integers, You subtract like normal. This is the same with negative integers, you just add the negative symbol.
Subtracting negative integers
When subtracting negative integers, you subtract like normal and then add your negative symbol. A number line would help a lot if you are a visual person.
Subtracting positive and negative integers
When subtracting a positive and a negative number, you can use the rule, Keep, Change, Change. (kCC) You keep the first number, change the symbol, and then change the other number, to its opposite.
Multiplying Positive Integers
When Multiplying positive integers, You multiply like normal. Say you have 3 bags with 5 marbles in each bag. That is written as 5*3. 5*3+15, so there is a total of 15 marbles in all.
Multiplying negative integers
You have to pay attention to the signs. Since both of them are negative, the answer will be positive. If the signs are the same, the answer is positive. If the signs are different, the answer will be negative.
Multiplying Positive and Negative Integers
You have to look at the signs. If the signs are different, your answer will negative. If the signs are the same, the answer is positive. Then you just multiply like normal.
Dividing Positive Integers
When dividing positive integers, you divide like normal. You have to look at the signs though. Division can be written with a division symbol and a slash.
Dividing Negative Integers
With dividing negative integers, you divide like normal and then add your division sign. You need to look at your signs.
Dividing Positive and Negative Integers
When you have different signs, the answer is negative. When you have the same signs, the answer is positive. Then, you divide like normal.
