SCIENCe By Cem Fossil? any remains, impression, or trace of a living thing of a former geologic age, as a skeleton, footprint, etc. An exact stone copy of an organism, the hard parts of which have been penetrated and replace by minerals. Petrified Fossils A mold and cast fossil is an exact stone replica of an organism but it is formed like this... Molds and Casts The first layer of sediment hardens and forms a mold. then a new layer of sediment fills in the mold and hardens. That is the cast. Example of how a carbon film forms The leaves are frequently reduced to a carbon film in a process known as carbonization or distillation Are structures preserved in sedimentary rocks that record biological activity. Trace fossils Preserved remains The preserved remains of animals of evidence of their existence are Fossils. relative and absolute age of rocks Absolute- Actual Age of a rock
Relative- The age of something compared to other things Radiometric dating based on a comparison between the observed abundance of a naturally occurring radioactive isotope and its decay products, using known decay rates.
