A codified system of law prevents abuse of power by restricting the power of the ruler, and by organizing ways for the people to control the leader.

what would've happened had their been a codified system of law?

Fathers wouldn't have to fear losing their sons

restricts the rulers ability to do whatever they want whenever they want

should the rulers do something wrong or illegal, this power allows for them to be removed
