Transcript of Macbeth: Act 4 scene 1

At the beginning of this scene, the 3 witches enter and are preparing a spell

(Recall to 3.5, Hecate is telling witches to prepare a spell of illusions to corrupt Macbeth) Macbeth
Act 4 scene 1 * right now, we are going to listen the audio tape of Macbeth Setting the setting of this scene is thunder.

The witches is chanting

Emphasis on grotesque (the thing that they put in the cauldron are very weird)

-It shows Macbeth’s transformation
-in the past, the evil (witches) sought him out
-Right now, Macbeth seeks out evil (witches)
-We see Macbeth’s deterioration of character Macbeth come to witches’ place
It is because he needs some prophecies from the witches

“Macbeth, Macbeth, Macbeth! Beware Macduff! Beware thane of Fife…..” (line 78 - 80)

The first apparition tells Macbeth to beware Macduff 2nd apparition
Name: A Bloody Child

“Be Bloody, bold and resolute! Laugh scorn the power of man, for none of woman born shall harm Macbeth ” (Line 87 - 89) The bloody child tells Macbeth no one in the world can hurt him except for the one who is not woman born (born unnaturally) Macbeth reaction

“Then live, Macduff: what need I fear of thee.......and take bond of fate: thou shalt not live.........” (Line 90-95) Macbeth assumes the word from the bloody child cancel all his fear

Macbeth becomes over confident

Also, it also reveals the next victim is Macduff Woman born means baby born naturally. 3rd apparition
Name: A child Crowned, with a tree in his hand

“Macbeth shall never vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinare hill shall come against him” (Line 102 - 104)

Macbeth receives three prophecies:

1) Beware Macduff
2) No woman born can harm Macbeth
3)Macbeth is never to be conquered until the Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinare Hills

We can see that Macbeth is very scared of the person who can take his crown
He is suspicious of Macduff The three witches give Macbeth three prophecies by calling some illusions appear (apparition) Moreover, Macbeth wants to know one more thing: (Hint: Line 103 - 104)
“Shall Banquo’s issue ever reign in his Kingdom” TThe three witches provide Macbeth with another illusion of eight kings and Banquo’s spirit The eight kings look similar to each other and all look like Banquo Foreshadowing: Macbeth reveal his plan: he is going to attack Fife. Now he is going to kill women and children

We see Macbeth’s decline.
Macbeth fears that the future king will be Banquo’s descendant.

Lennox tells Macbeth that Macduff has fled to England.

Macbeth has to do something immediately. He decides to attack Fife.
Macbeth Reaction
“That will never be; who can impress the forest, bid the tree unfix his earth bound root……” (Line 105 - 114)

Macbeth truly feels happy with the apparitions.
He feels safe because no one can move the forest. It is impossible
