28th January
Our Queen Beatrix announces that she will
abdicate. Her eldest son, Prince Willem-Alexander,
will succeed her as the new monarch of the Netherlands.

24th February
The 85th edition of the Academy Awards
takes places in Los Angeles.
28th February
Pope Benedict XVI resigns. A unique phenomenon in the history of the Vatican, because it makes him the first pope to relinquish the office since the year 1415.

8th March
North Korea declares invalid the cease-fire that ended the fighting of the Korean War.
On July 27, 2013 that cease-fire will be 60 years old.

15th April
A bomb attack during the famous marathon
in Boston takes place. During the manhunt on the perpetrators (2 brothers) one of them dies. The other one is arrested.
30th April
Prince Willem-Alexander becomes the Netherlands' first male monarch in more than a century. Princess Maxima becomes Queen.
2nd May
The release of the first banknotes in the
Europe-series with a value of five euros.
25th May
Bayern Munchen wins the all-German
final of the 2012/2013 UEFA Champions
League. A special moment for the Dutch
Arjen Robben after all the final traumas he had.
29th June
The 100th edition of the world's most
famous cycling race, Tour de France, starts in Corsica.

14th August
Egyptian authorities declare a state of emergency after the government violently dispersed sit-ins staged by supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi.

7th September
The IOC announces that the 2020 Summer Olympics will be held in the Japanese capital Tokyo.
21th August
Bradley Manning, a United States army soldier,
was convicted in July after releasing the largest set of classified documents ever leaked to the public. On the 21th of August he is sentenced to 35 years in prison.
21th September
The civil war in Syria reaches a new low.
Nearly 1500 people die during a poison gas attack.
Once again nobody intervened.

1st October
Shutdown in the United States.
The federal government enters a shutdown and curtails most routine operations after the Congress failed to enact legislation appropriating funds.
8th November
Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines and is called one of the most intense tropical storms to ever make landfall anywhere in the world. It sustained winds of over 195mph and a storm surge of up to 30 feet that devastates coastal areas.

5th December
Former South African President and anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela dies at age 95 of complications from a recurring lung infection.
