Transcript of Henry Hudson

Henry Hudson Henry Hudson was born in London, England in 1565. He was well educated and came from a wealthy family. English explorer and navigator Henry Hudson made 4 difficult and dangerous sea journeys trying to find a shortcut from Europe to the far East but he never found what he was looking for... There is little known about Hudson before the first voyage in 1607. He was hired as captain by the Muscovy Company to find a northern route to Asia. He was trapped by ice but managed to still explore some islands near Greenland and recorded sightings of whales which opened up a new hunting territory. Next year again he set sail in search of the Northwest Passage. Hudson returned to England with no success because his ship was blocked by thick ice. The Final Journey Henry Hudson left England in April 1610 aboard the ship Discovery and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, passed through the Hudson Strait between Labrador and Baffin Island. They spent weeks to explore area, but the passage wasn't found. Conclusion At this time many countries competed to find the shortest route to reach the Orient for trading goods. Hudson, like many navigators had challenges to face finding the Northwest passage. He also wanted to become rich and famous. Henry Hudson spent his life searching for different routes to Asia but failed on his quest. Despite these misfortunes, Henry Hudson considered as famous explorer and made many important contributions to geography and further exploration and settlement of North America. In 1609 Hudson was hired by Dutch East India Company as a commander of the Half Moon. And once again his travels were blocked by ice, but he did not return home. Crossing the Atlantic Ocean his crew visited Nova Scotia, Chesapeake Bay, New York Harbor and explored Hudson River. He returned home without finding the all-water route to the East. The ship was locked in ice again... They hardly survived the winter, and Hudson decided to continue explore farther to the west but the crew mutinied. Hudson, his son and 7 others were put in small boat and set adrift. His discoveries of Hudson Bay and James Bay area, north of Canada gave right for England to claim a large part of Canada as their territory. Many places bare his name in Northern America such as Hudson Bay, Hudson Strait, Hudson town(Quebec) in Canada, Hudson City, Hudson River in the US, many schools and streets as well. 2000-2010 2013. Web. 23 Jan. 2013 1996–2013 They were never seen again.
