PUSSY RIOT: A Punk Prayer
About Pussy Riot
Pussy Riot is a Russian Feminist Punk band that brought attention to their political views by performing songs of protest in calculated public spaces and posting videos of theses performances on the internet
videos focused on feminist issues, the dictatorial regime of Vladimir Putin, and the corrupt relationship between the Church and State
They captured global media with their performance of a song called "Punk Prayer - Mother of God, Chase Putin Away!" in the Christian Orthodox Christ of the Savior Church which lead to the arrest of three of the members of Pussy Riot
Pussy Riot Arrest
"using the courts"
instant protests against the pussy riot arrest broke out (started local and spread)
through social media (twitter, Facebook, blogs ) people all around the world expressed their support
the free Pussy Riot movement emerged
amnesty international stance on political prisoners attracted further media attention
Famous names joined the cause and expressed their support through tweets, potions, and media stints
The Pussy Riot case gained so much popularity that within a year a book called "Let's start a Pussy Riot" was published and a documentary titled Pussy Riot! A Punk Prayer" was filmed
Free Pussy Riot
The media response
While the arrest was harsh and unjust, it enabled Pussy Riot to become the symbol of the rapidly growing opposition to Putin, giving momentum to a new movement (attracting the media)
Sept. 8, 2012: in her closing statements in trial Katia said "we expect that we will be imprisoned, but we have won. The whole world now sees that the criminal case against us has been fabricated. The system cannot conceal the repressive nature of this trial"
similarly Nadia said the arrest confirms the fact that "this system fears the truth and sincerity that we represent"

Pussy Riots protest are congruent with the "citizens media" third wave feminism that we've studied
"first, collectivity is enacting its citizenship by actively intervening and transforming the established mediascape; second, that these media are contesting social codes, legitimized identities, and institutionalized social relations; and third, that these communication practices are empowering the community involved" (Piepmeier, p. 163).
The success of Pussy Riot's ability to generate global support challenges the common third wave critique, showing that fractured subjective activism can effectively generate social/political progress
