The Civil War 1861-1865 1852- Harriet Beecher Stowe publishes Uncle Tom's Cabin 1856- Senator Sumner caned 1863- Emancipation Proclamation 1850- Fugitive Slave Act 1857- Dred Scott November, 1860- Lincoln elected president December, 1860- South Carolina secedes. It is followed within two months by several other states. 1861- Confederate forces attack Fort Sumter, SC April 9, 1865- Lee surrenders Typical soldier: farmer, 16-25 yrs. old, 5'8", 120 lbs, never been more than twenty miles from home, thought war would be fun Many women disguised themselves to fight on both sides 1859- John Brown raids Harper's Ferry, WV April 14, 1865- Lincoln assasinated Confederate Union Bias- the inability to judge without opinion Objective- showing both sides of a topic without opinion
