At the start of the journey,
things were simple;
things were bland.

Food, shelter and water
maybe a loved one to hold your hand

Pictures on the wall
to remind you where you’d been

Your world was very small;
only the places you had seen

You created tools that made
things easier;
gave you time to spare

Your world got a little bigger
with more things that you could share

With more time and more words
came more thinking and more time to fill

Kings and Emperors from many lands
Convinced men to fight so that Royalty could rule

Art and culture came to the fore
great works were created and admired

Riches and titles, wigs and perfume,
things shiny and bright were desired

You’d explored all over
until nothing was left untouched

Then you all fought against each other
Until atomic bombs signalled enough

Even those who weren't there
Could see the damage caused

Television, newspapers and movies
Showed the cost of a world at war

You learnt to join with friends
and share the work and the rewards

More to do,
more to share,
more things that needed words

And now there is no time
Even though machines do your chores

You’re so busy talking all over the world
Your loved ones are being ignored

Travel became much easier
By sea, sky or road

And you could talk to anyone, anywhere
by computer or telephone
