Berry College Autumn Lewis Carver 1 Foundations of Knowledge History Founded in 1902 by Martha Berry
First graduating was in 1932
Accepted only rural students Daughter of prosperous business man (1865- 1942)
Wanted to create a school for the poor ever since she met a small boy with no education and didnt go to church.
Founded small schools
Used 83 acres she inherited to start the Boy's Industrial School
Added a girls school in 1909
Added a junior college in 1926
The junior college became a senior college named Berry College Students required to work two 8 hour days and attend classes 4 other days
Arts, sciences, training in industry, agriculture, domestic arts, teaching, business, and a requirement of religious classes were offered Donations expanded the school to
26,000 acres
The death of Berry and WWII led to
the closing of the girls school
and a struggle for leadership 1956- John R. Bertrand helped the school to start offer vocational training, liberal arts, and professional programs 1957- Urban

Accepted 1980s- ranked in the Southeasts top 5 Liberal Arts insttution Students from Boy's Industrial School Old Mill at Berry
Built in 1930 gift from The Republic Mining and Manufacturing Company
Water wheel considered one of he largest in the world, 42 ft in diameter House o' Dreams
Large stone cottage on top of Lavender mountain
Built in 1922 as a 20Th anniversary gift for Martha Berry
Now open to the Public Possum Trot Church optionally built in 1850
"cradle of Berry College" Roosevelt Cabin AKA "the cabin"
one of the oldest buildings at Berry, built in 1902
1903 Martha Berry moves in
Early uses was small kitchen, Daily prayer, Sunday School, a host to the farewell dinner, and alumni headquarters
Now preserved as a museum Academics liberal arts that provides first hand work experiences
