Transcript of Las Soldaderas: The female soldiers of the Mexican Revolutio

Las Soldaderas

By: Anneke Davis

Why female soldiers?
The women of the mexican revolution were like any other women of any other revolution in history, except for one thing: they fought back. These women accompanied their husbands at war rather than staying at home unprotected and vulnerable to all kinds of dangers of that time.
How did they do it?
The mindset at the time of the Mexican Revolution was that wives must be loyal to their husbands. One way of showing loyalty was of course joining their husbands at war. It would be considered unwise a women refused to accompany her husband in war (even though it was her choice) some husbands forced their wives to do so.
What did they do?
Normally Soldaderas would basically do kind of the "dirty work" in the war. They would cook, clean, smuggle, and sometimes even fight (on small occassions). It was all based on gender roles also. So they would basically do what they would do at home.
