Neurolinguistics Is an offspring of psycholinguistics that investigates how human brain creates and process speech and languages. CAUSES Dissolution can be caused by an unhappy accident Motor cortex Aphasia Is the loss of speech, or language due to brain damage Surgical Evidence Aphasiology is the study of aphasia, or loss of speech and this has flourished with the advances in diagnosis and surgery Dissolution LANGUAGE LOSS Traumatic events in our personal life Unfortunate roll of the genetic dice Talking about the brain, most of the people forget that are millions of association pathways which connect the left and right hemisphere, here we have the CORPUS CALLOSUM, that is the largest sheath of association pathways connecting the two hemispheres Corpus Callosum SPEECH LANGUAGE DISORDERS Language loss arising from inherited disorders The primary area of the brain for the initiation of all voluntary muscular movements. Sensory cortex The primary location for processing all sensations Broca's area Located in the bottom portion of the motor cortex Wernick's area Located at the lower portion of the sensory cortex THE WAY THE BRAIN CONTROLS HUMAN SPEECH AND LANGUAGE Speech production resided largely in Broca's area and comprehension of language was confined to Wernicke's area Broca's area Wernicke's area Types of Aphasia Broca's Aphasia
Wernicke's Aphasia Broca's Aphasia Speech and writing are slow, very hesitant, and in severe cases, completely inhibited.
Automatic speech and function words an remain almost unaffected, usually the production of key words, like subjects, verbs, and objects, is hesitant and inaccurate. Wernicke's Aphasia Speech production and writing are pretty much intact, but patients experience a great deal of trouble processing linguistic input. The patients tend to ramble somewhat incoherently. Two kinds of surgical operations have bearing on question of language dissolution:
Hemispherectomy: neurosurgeons will open up the affected side of the skull and remove almost the entire left or right hemisphere
Split-brain operation:the surgeon makes a front-to-back incision along the corpus callosum, severing most of the association pathways which connect the hemispheres. HEMISPHERECTOMY SPLIT-BRAIN Dissolution from non-damaged brains • Stuttering: Refers to as stammering, is one of the most common articulation problems. It is not random; it occurs, most frequently on the initial word of a clause, the first syllable of a word, the initial consonant of a syllable, and on stop consonants. •Down’s syndrome: The degree of language disability is directly proportionate to the amount of cognitive damage. The enlargement of the tongue creates poor articulation, and though comprehension is not significantly affected, expressive speech is hesitant and limited. Autism: It is not language impairment, and the first signs of this disorder are apparent in infants, before speech has really developed. They exhibits a bizarre disregard for human interaction and, in contrast to a normal child, ignores eye and face contact. Language loss through aging •Alzheimer: Appear to involve both hereditary and environmental factors, the brain deteriorates prematurely, and this loss has profound and ultimately injurious effects on every aspect of a person’s performance.
