Transcript of The Five People You Meet In Heaven

On his 83rd birthday, Eddie, a war veteran and a maintenance worker at the Ruby Pier amusement park, dies while trying to save a girl from a faulty ride. When he awakens in the afterlife, he encounters five people with ties to his past, who help him understand the meaning of his life. The Five People You Meet In Heaven is a thematic novel that explores various life philosophies. There are quite a few examples of symbolism in this novel, here is an example that we felt was most poignant. Plot Settings Themes Symbols There is a story in the novel about a man whose key falls out of his pocket whilst riding one of the rides. It seemed miniscule and was not mentioned again. In the end of the novel it turns out that it is his key that wore away at the ride cables and caused Eddie's death. The key represents how things, no matter how small, can mean the difference between life and death. One theme present throughout the novel is love. The love Eddie has for his wife Margaurite, the love he holds for Ruby Pier and lastly the importance of love in a persons life. Albom stresses the fact that truly is all around. There is also a religious theme to the novel as it takes place in heaven. However the book is religiously ambiguous and pushes no specific religion. The heaven depicted in the novel is more spititual than anything else. The last major theme is lessons, the purpose of the book is to enlighten the reader. Each of Eddie's five people provide one lesson, the five lessons are:
1.No life is a waste and all lives are connected
2. Sacrifice is a part of life
3. Forgivness
4.Lost love is still love
5.Everyone's life has a purpose By the end of his journey Eddie realizes the impact that he has had on the lives of others and is richer for the experience. The first setting of the story is Ruby Pier where both he and his father spent thier lives working as maintenance men. Eddie dies here when he is 83, he is killed by a faulty ride. When he dies Eddie travels to the Ruby Pier of the past. It is here where he meets the Blue Man, who is his first person. Eddie then travels to a war zone, where he meets his old army captain, who died while serving in the war. Eddie then travels to a Sea Side diner, located next to Ruby Pier, it is here he meets his third person, Ruby. Eddie next travels to a montage of different weddings from various cultures. It is here Eddie reunites with his wife, Marguarite. She chose to live in a heaven comprised of weddings because she never had a real one. Eddie meets Tala, his final person in a park. It is here that he learns his true lifes purpose. Characters Protagonist of the novel
