sets the stage for the climax.

Climax
The decisive moment
the turning point
determines the outcome of the conflict.
Falling Action
series of events which take place after the climax
protagonist must react to the changes that occur during the climax
Resolution (Denouement)
occurs after the climax
establishes the way things are going to be from then on
ties up the loose ends of the story
