by Ms. Alsip Main Idea and Supporting Details I can demonstrate my comprehension of a text by explaining the main idea using specific details. Our Learning Target Let's Talk About It What is a main idea? What are a supporting details? The main idea is the most important idea the author wants you to know about a specific paragraph. Supporting details in a paragraph are important pieces of information that support or prove the main idea. Being familiar with main ideas and knowing how to find them is helpful to you as a reader and as a writer. To be able to explain the main idea using specific details, you must be able to: Pick out the important details in the text. & Understand what the author is trying to get through to you as the reader.
