Science Fair Project
Does listening to music while studying affect your ability to learn and memorize facts?

If a student is listening to music while studying, then they will be able to memorize more facts.
The reason we think it will is because when we use music personally while studying it helps us to concentrate. It helps us block out other distractions and helps the study material stay in our head along with the music.
Studies show that listening to music does help the majority of people when studying. Research says that music engages the area of the brain that is involved in paying attention, making predictions and updating the event in memory.
Other research shows that music relaxes your brain, making it easier to concentrate.
Several other studies also show that when listening to music it can help alter your mood and feelings. Putting you in a better mood than you were before. Hence, putting you in a mood to study.
A recent study in Illinois shows that a majority of college students find listening to music while studying more beneficial.

Data Analysis
After the test, we have figured out that studying with music has a negative effect on remembering facts. The difference between with and without music test averages is significantly large. (15%)
Our hypothesis was incorrect because we thought music would have a positive effect on studying abilities. While our test did prove that studying with music has a negative effect, in some cases the music will have a positive effect on the people(because of peoples personal preferences).
So, in the future we would like to test different people and see if we still get the same results.
