Feminism and Sexual Empowerment
cultural artifact
The cultural artifact that I have chosen to explicate is the picture of how some people of our society view optimist, pessimist, and feminist. I came across this picture on a popular social networking site and by looking at the comments, I could tell it caused lots of controversy. I will look closely at the feminist theory we have discussed earlier in this course.
Why I chose this artifact?
As a woman, I see it as an attack on feminism. I would think that a man came up with this picture and thought it was funny but it could be either a man or woman. Therefore, society can view feminism in a good or bad way. In terms of gender, I think a feminist would also see the cultural artifact as an attack on women.
My thoughts...
The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities; organized activity in support of women's rights and interests.
The picture shows glasses filled with something unknown to the middle. Each glass have a description of how some people may view the glass. An optimistic person sees it as half full and I can identify with this because that is how I view the glass. A pessimistic person sees the glass as half empty and some people can identify with that view. Now, the last glass is supposed to be the feministic view of the glass and it states that the glass is being raped.

First Wave of Feminism
According to chapter 2 of the text, "The early suffragettes were a diverse group in both their backgrounds and their goals but focused primarily on getting women the right to vote".
Attacks on Feminism
It is a false equalization to state that feminism is just as “extreme” as patriarchy. It is a lie. Women who embrace feminism do not seek to dominate, control, or hurt men in the way that a patriarchal society allows men to hurt women.

Feminist Theory
Feminist Theory is an outgrowth of the general movement to empower women worldwide. Feminists fight for the equality of women and argue that women should share equally in society opportunities and resources.
Consequences of Feminism
In researching, I have found that many believe modern feminism can have a negative impact on society. "The negative agenda of modern feminism not only harms the family, but the education system, the workplace, the government, the world of sports, and the military".-Malori Fuchs
Consequences of Feminism cont...
Sexual Empowerment
"Many feminists emphasized the important connection between sexuality and power, and so taking control of their own sexuality was an important goal of feminism for many woman." - Ryle
Sexual Empowerment 101
Be comfortable and confident in who you are and the choices you make and this starts with taking an honest look inside yourself and determining who you are, what you stand for and what your personal
boundaries are. Women should not be afraid of their sexuality.
Some Types of Feminism:
Sexual Empowerment cont...
In reality, women should be fully comfortable with who they are and their sexuality. Teaching the up and coming generation can be very beneficial. Women need to heal, explore, examine and learn about their sexuality.
Why is it important to understand the gender implications of this cultural artifact?
Today, women continue to make important strides towards equality, and continue to face resistance and backlash. Misrepresentations of feminism can discourage people from identifying as feminists. This may cause a barrier for women in the future. The cultural artifact may seem funny to most but women shouldn't overlook things like that in my opinion. Feminism is not a joke.
