Comparing Archetypal Themes in
A Multimedia Essay By Chantelle Castanier
The most common archetypal theme found in both
The Lion King
and
Macbeth
is the battle between good and evil. This battle between two forces is a major theme that is found in both of these works. In
Macbeth
, the fight against Macbeth and the evil he has done shows this theme. In
The Lion King
, the fight against Scar and the evil he has done also shows this theme. The battle between good and evil is the most common archetypal theme that is found in both of these works.
In a battle between good and evil, betrayals can be expected. Someone who was once on the good side turns out to be evil. This is a very common thing that happens with the theme of good vs. evil. This very thing also happens in both
Macbeth
and
The Lion King.
In
Macbeth
, King Duncan is betrayed by Macbeth and killed. Macbeth did not show this coming in his outward appearence. This betrayal began the battle between good and evil in
Macbeth
. A similar thing happened in
The Lion King
. Scar betrayed Mufasa and killed him, and nobody knew that was his plan. This also began the battle between good and evil in
The Lion King
.
Another major thing that happens in the battle between good and evil is a plot that is made by the evil chracters. Often this plan involves evil overthrowing good. This plotting against good happens in both
Macbeth
and
The Lion King
and it fuels the battle between the two forces.
Evil plots are found in both
Macbeth
and
The Lion King
. Scar plots to kill Mufasa and take over the throne. Macbeth plots to murder King Duncan and others in order to take over the throne. These evil plots are what fuel the battle between good and evil.
In most battles between good and evil, there is always a time that evil fights back against the forces of good. There is a point that seems like evil is going to prevail. This can be seen when Scar has Simba hanging off a cliff in the same way Mufasa was when he died.
This quote shows the evil deed that Scar commited and shows a moment in the story where it looked as if evil might prevail.
In every good vs. evil battle, it is expected that good wins in the end. There comes a time in each story where the good guy faces off against the evil character to restore all problems. In
Macbeth
, this happens when Macduff faces off against Macbeth to win back the kingdom for the rightfull heir.
The outcome of the good guy winning in the end can also be seen in
The Lion King
. When Simba faces off against Scar to win back his kingdom, this is when goods stands up to evil and wins. This is an important part of the battle between good and evil theme.
Conclusion

The quotes that I chose illustrate the battle between good and evil because each quote highlights a certain element of the theme. These include the evil plot, the rise against evil, and good triumphing in the end. Each quote represents the theme in a unique way, showing all aspects of the battle in both The Lion King and Macbeth.
The multimedia elements used helped to illustrate the battle between good and evil because of the variety of elements used. The dramatic music and audio used helped to add emotion. The images used help to illustrate the battle from both sides.
The theme of the battle between good and evil can be applied to everyday life in a variety of ways. We may have to stand up for good at some point in our lives and in a way "fight" evil. Or it could be a battle within ourselves when it comes to having to make a moral decision.
