By: Lisa Chaney presentation by: Jordan Pepchinski Why did I choose this person ? Childhood Adult life Where did Coco Chanel live? Positive Contributions Interesting Facts I am a huge fan of Coco Chanel because i love fashion and her work is legendary. If it wasn't for her we might still be wearing tight dresses and skirts down to our ankles. I also appreciate that she wasn't just born rich and famous. Chanel had to overcome a lot of obstacles as a child. She is a perfect example of " hard work pays off". Recommendations I recommend this book to anyone who loves fashion and anyone who enjoys reading about amazing, independent woman who make an impact on life as we know it. This book was a little lengthy but it gave great details on every aspect of her life. If you are not turned on but the idea of fashion i think this is still a great book to read because it has history and mystery given the time period it took place in. INTRODUCTION I chose to read a biography on Coco Chanel because she is a fashion legend that made a huge impact on today's style. We go through so many tacky trends, but Chanel's classic look is still fresh after many years. Coco had to face many struggles. She started at the bottom and through persistence and determination she ended up becoming one of the finest fashion designers in the world. Chanel's parents Albert Chanel and Jeanne Devolle were not married, nor had they loved each other. Chanels father was a traveling salesman and her mother was always pregnant So she never really had love or affection. Her mother died when she was six years old, leaving her father with five children, whom he quickly shipped out to various relatives. The young Chanel was sent to the orphanage of the Catholic monastery of Aubazine, where she learned the work of a seamstress. When she turned 18, she left the orphanage, and took up work for a local tailor.Chanel often lied about when she was born and where she grew up in fear that she would be looked down upon. During a brief moment where Chanel was a singer in cafes and concert halls, Gabrielle adopted the name "Coco" which was a nickname given to her by local soldiers who went to watch her. During World War 1 at the age of 23 Chanel became a mistress to Etienne Balsan and lived with him for 3 years, there she started designing hats. She then started a relationship with a wealthy English man named Arthur Edward Capel which lasted 9 years. Capel financed her appartment in Paris and her first shops. Etienne Balsan Arthur Edward Capel Opening her first shop on Paris’s Rue Cambon in 1910, Chanel started out selling hats. She later added stores in Deauville and Biarritz and began making clothes. Chanel took her thriving business to new heights. She launched her first perfume, Chanel No. 5, which was the first to feature a designer’s name. The economic depression of the 1930s had a negative impact on her company, but it was the outbreak of World War II that led Chanel to close her business. She fired her workers and shut down her shops. During the German occupation of France, Chanel got involved with a German military officer, Hans Gunther von Dincklage. Many people viewed her relationship with a Nazi officer as a betrayal of her country.Chanel left Paris, spending some years in Switzerland. At the age of 70, Chanel made a triumphant return to the fashion world until January 10, 1971 when Chanel died. A little more than a decade after her death, designer Karl Lagerfeld took over her company to continue the Chanel legacy.Today the Chanel company thrives and takes in millions of sales each year.
