Transcript of Giardia Lamblia
What is Giardia Lamblia?
Giardia Lamblia is an infection caused by non- visible intestinal parasite, commonly infecting many people via drinking or recreational water.
Giadiasis is this parasite's causing illness or disease and is spread through contaminated feces. It is caused by the protozoan giardia lamblia.
Various ways for Giardia to make it's way into your intestines include:
eating uncooked foods
picked up from dirty surfaces
swallowing recreational water
Examples of recreational water that have a change of being contaminated:
The life cycle begins with a cyst (infective form and cell shaped).
It is consumed by humans in the cyst form and takes about a week to get to the digestive tract where it begins to spread.
Once ingested by a host and into the disgestive tract it transforms into the trophozoite stage (mobile form and pear shaped with 8 flagellants ) and emerges to an active state of feeding attaching to intestines.
When in small intestine, one cyst forms two tropoziote.
After the feeding stage, the trophozoite undergoes asexual replication through longitudinal binary fission.
Then some of the trophozoite turn back into the cyst form and leave the body while the rest remain the same.
Prevention of Giardia Lamblia
The prevention of spreading Giardia lamblia is similar for both medical and non medical.
Boiling water for one minute is the surest method to make water safe to drink and kill disease causing microorganisms.
Simple things such as washing produce, washing hands after using the washroom and washing hands before and after eating meals are simple tasks that will also lower the chance of obtaining this virus.
In humans, this infection is only symptomatic about 50% of the time. Symptoms include:
Loss of appetite
This infection is often misdiagnosed.
Accurate diagnosis consists of antigen test or if that is unavailable, an ova and parasite examination of stool is required.
Though multiple stool examinations are recommended since the cysts and trophozoines are not shed consistently.
Giardia Lamblia is an infection caused by a non- visible intestinal parasite, commonly infecting many people via drinking or recreational water.
In humans, this infection is only symptomatic about 50% of the time. Some symptoms include: diarrhea, stomach pains, weight loss, bloating.
The life cycle consists of 2 stages, cysts which is the infective form and trophozoides which is the mobile form. Trophozoides feed off of the intestines and are released through stool.
Treatments include: antigen test or if that is unavailable, an ova and parasite examination of stool is required.
Avoiding this infection is as simple as just staying hygienic and being aware of clean drinking water.
