The Periodic Table Background Information The Alkaline Earth Metal Family Noble Gases Transition Metals Dimitri Mendeleev Is commonly known as the founder of the Periodic Table: Alkali Metal Family In the Alkali Metal Family there are many elements. These include; Aluminum, Cesium, Francium, Lithium, Potassium, Rubidium, and Sodium
These elements are all shiny, very light, and malleable.
In the real world, you could use Aluminum for soda cans, Potassium which helps our muscles and allows our nerves to transfer signals. The Periodic Table's main purpose was to better organize the elements in a chart so that everyone could understand the elements and how they are all related. The members of the Alkaline Earth Metal Family include beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium.
All Alkaline Earth Metals have an Oxidation number of +2, they are very reactive, and tend to form strong chemical bonds.
Calcium is used in the making of steel, Strontium is an ingredient in coral, and Strontium is also used in pyrotechnics. By Ana Aiza, Ethan Tsui, Lucas Wang,
Maddie Everhart Halogens All Transition Metals have at least 3 things in common: All transition metals are very hard, so they have high melting and boiling points, they have high electrical conductivity, and all have positive oxidation states.
Examples of transition Metals in the real world are: Titanium is used make gas turbine engines, Mercury is found in batteries, and Vanadium is used for making springs. There are many elements in the Halogens family, these elements include; Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine, and Astatine
All of these elements have 7 valence electrons and are very reactive because they are one valence electron away from becoming a complete atom.
In the real world, Chlorine, can be used to disinfect pools. Flourine was used in World War I to help create the atomic bomb. Lastly, Bromine was used to create dyes, medicine, and pesticides. Argon, helium, krypton, flerovium, neon, radon, xenon are elements found in noble gases.
At the top of the noble gases are helium, and the shell is full with 2 electrons.they also don't need to react with other elements, because their shells are full.
You can fill a balloon with a noble gas (helium), also every time you pass a restaurant with open signs in the window they are made withering. And whenever your in the car and stop your tail lights go on that have krypton in them. Rare Earth Metals All Rare Earth Metals are so similar that it is hard to tell them apart. They all naturally occur together in minerals and all have high luster, and are silver, silvery-white, or gray metals
The Rare Earth Metals can be used in many different ways:
As of today, every Prius hybrid car on the road carries with it about 10 pounds of lanthanum.
The Rare Earth Metal Europium is a phosphor that creates a bright red on an iPhone screen
Cerium gets put into a solvent that workers use to polish devices as they move along the assembly line.
